Judging System

Music Performance (Individual) Judge is on the field
• Evaluates accuracy, tone quality, intonation and musical demands
• All sections are evaluated—woodwinds, brass, percussion including
front ensemble

Music Performance (Ensemble) Judge is in the press box
• Evaluates accuracy, tone quality, intonation and musical demands
Includes ensemble cohesiveness, dynamics, pulse, tempo, phrasing, and style
• All sections are evaluated—woodwinds, brass, percussion including
front ensemble

Visual Performance (Individual) Judge is on the field
• Evaluates individual performance for accuracy and quality
• Includes alignment and spacing, breaks and turns, form control,
tempo, body carriage and articulation, poise, understanding of roles and
uniformity of style
• Winds, percussion and color guard are evaluated

Visual Performance (Ensemble) Judge is in the press box
• Evaluates quality of technique, accuracy and definition, and visual artistry
• Includes control, ensemble cohesiveness and projection of style
• Includes control and balance of form, orientation and timing control
• Includes expression, phrasing, variety and visual musicality

General Effect (Visual) Judge is in the press box
• Evaluates effectiveness of repertoire, showmanship and coordination
• Includes creativity, enhancement, interpretation/musicality, phrasing and
expression, use of balance, body, equipment, focus and variety
• Includes communication of roles, emotion, entertainment, professionalism and
spirit/intensity
• Evaluates audio and visual blend, auxiliary contribution, continuity/ unity,
maximized effects and staging

General Effect (Music) Judge is in the press box
• Evaluates effectiveness of repertoire, showmanship and coordination
• Includes enrichment/enhancement, creativity and imagination, full range of
expression and volume levels, use of time and variety
• Includes communication of roles, emotion, entertainment, professionalism and
spirit/intensity
• Includes audio/visual blend, auxiliary contribution, continuity and unity,
maximized effects and staging

Percussion Judge is on the field
• Battery and Front Ensemble are evaluated on performance within set parameters•

Auxiliary (Colorguard) Judge is in the press box

Timing and Penalties Judge is on the field
• Bands are evaluated on performance within set parameters
• Performance must be within physical boundaries
• Band must be ready to perform on time
• Band must be on the field, perform and leave the field within their
